This hike offer great rewards on a clear day when you can see Mount Saint Helens. There are sections of exposure that can make one nervous near Loowit Point. These exposed sections, would make it dangerous for all but the most experienced and prepared if covered in snow. Because of the lack of trees, this hike is perfect for sun starved Pacific NW person at the end of a long dark winter to celebrate the first clear sunny day.

The Hummock mounds caused by the debris avalanche of the 1980 eruption and subsequent erosion are a fascinating geologic phenomenon. Some are there due to erosion and others due to deposits. They create a highly unusual hike environment at the beginning of the hike, and unique landscape views later in the hike.

Before leaving the area, you may wish to stop by for a visit at Mount St Helens Science and Learning Center  whice is within two miles of the trail head. This center may be closed mid week, but is often open on the weekends.

When traveling to the trailhead in winter, it is recommended that you check with the Washington State Department of Transportation  before departing on your drive to this hike.

Drive south on I-5 to the junction of State Road 504. Exit the freeway, and turn left (east) onto SR504 and follow it east, past the Silver Lake Visitor Center and on to the Coldwater Lake Visitor Center. Take the exit directing you to Johnston Ridge, but as you descend toward Coldwater Creek, you will come to the Hummocks Trailhead parking lot, which is paved, but without restroom facilities.
